To equip students with the necessary skills to design and conduct different kinds of interview, including structured interviewing, semi-structured interviewing and focus groups
To enable students to know when and how to apply different techniques of interviewing
To provide students with an understanding of how theoretical concerns influence interviewing approaches, practices, forms of interpretation and analysis
To provide students with skills in thematic, discourse and narrative analysis
To enable students to understand and identify inhibitors and facilitators of communication in interview situations
To encourage students to think about interviews as social contexts and to consider how the relational dynamics of the interview affect what people say
To sensitize students to the operation of power in interviews, and how power relations between participants in interviews have been recognised and addressed by interviewers
To raise questions about ethical issues which arise
