Objectives:

This course focuses on important developments in the field of asphalt technology. Rheology will be explained and binder tests will be reviewed.

Feedback will be given from International Conferences. The latest South African approach to asphalt technology will also be reviewed.

Asphalt mix design will be explored with attention to the factors that control the behavior and performance of asphalt mixes including resistance to fatigue, crack growth, permanent deformation and durability. The Bailey Mix Design
Method will be used.

Case studies will focus on recent, local and international development, relative to southern African context. In particular, EME, UTFC, Rolled-in-chips and HiMA in use in SA, will be discussed.
